The hop crop of Otsego County will this year amount to about 4,500,000 pounds. If an average profit of say four cents a pound can be realized, it will amount to about $180,000, which will not include interest on the land and buildings. It is a little singular to us that men who last year were refusing to sell at 30 to 42 cents, are this year rushing their hops onto a yielding market at 11 to 14 cents. It shows that many growers act more from impulse than from sound judgment. We should not force prime to choice hops on the market at this time. If growers will be patient holders, prices should advance ere the close of the year.

Sheriff Brown is entertaining a young man in the Otsego County jail who, when arraigned before Justice Harold D. Carpenter on a charge of carrying concealed weapons, gave his name as Harold Steele. Steele was found lying on the steps of the McEwan Ice Cream parlors at the corner of Main and Chestnut Streets Friday night dead drunk. He was arrested by Sheriff Brown and Officer Cooke. When he was searched it was found he was carrying a set of burglar’s tools sewed in the linings of his suit, a new H. & R. revolver, and a small bottle of chloroform.

The thirty-fifth annual meeting of the Sixth District branch of the Medical Society of the State of New York was held in Cooperstown last week. Papers presented dealt with cancer of the breast, mental disorders of the involutional period of life, treatment of pain arising from heart disease, recent advances in nutrition and the need for legislation to supplant the ancient coroners system with a system of medical examiners similar to that of New York City. The attendance of doctors and their wives was estimated at about 125 by Dr. George M. MacKenzie, head of the Bassett Hospital.

A new movement is growing in the United States – a movement to stop the thousands of senseless shootings that occur each year. The support for the Brady Bill is evidence of this movement. The League of Women Voters of New York State has chosen a ban on assault weapons in New York State as a 1991 legislative priority. The people of the United States can also make this their priority by supporting the U.S. Senate Crime Bill which also supports an increased ban on assault weapons. Now is the time to let your national and state legislators know that you want the shootings to stop. A vote on the Crime Bill is expected at the end of September.
