Doctors and Drugs: A large number of physicians are themselves addicted to morphine. This is no wonder, considering the strenuous life they lead, and the fact that they are continually handling the drug. Conscientious physicians have for some time past refused to administer it. But then, what was the use, while there were so many others willing to do so?
George H. Carley, publisher of The Freeman’s Journal, entered the employ of the U.S. Postal service on Monday as postmaster at Cooperstown. The commission, signed by President Wilson and Postmaster General Burleson reached Mr. Carley on Thursday.

A number of the Cooperstown members of the American Women’s Volunteer Services, Inc., were among the 6,000 present Saturday night at a gigantic barbecue party given by Mrs. Alice T. McLean on her estate at South Kortright in the interest of that organization. The aim of the organization of which Mrs. McLean is the founder is to unite all American women and to spread the organization throughout the country. There are three units in this vicinity—one at Cooperstown headed by Mrs. Myers Hoyt; one at Oneonta, headed by Mrs. James Greenough; and one at Delhi, which has been directed by Mrs. Frank Farrington. The local unit began a year ago at the Knox School in Cooperstown, under the leadership of Mrs. Alexander S. Phinney. The organization now has offices at No. 27 East 70th Street, New York City.

About 60 people from the Otsego Right to Life, the anti-abortion group, protested against abortion at Bassett Hospital. It was the group’s first time protesting at Bassett, but representatives said they would return every Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. They said that Bassett officials told them that as long as abortion was legal, the hospital would allow women to have them. Some protesters were Bassett employees who said they represented themselves and not the hospital.
