Foundation Announces $100,000 in Awards

The Community Foundation of Otsego County has announced the commitment of 19 awards totaling more than $100,000.00 to Otsego nonprofits. Mirroring CFOC’s strategic plan, the awards cycle was divided into three categories: Immediate Needs, Strengthening Nonprofits and Strengthening Community. The response to the call for applications was heartening, with nearly 50 organizations applying for funds and requesting just under $430,000.00.…

BFS Completes July Water Sampling

The SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station collected open water samples and water quality data from Otsego Lake on Wednesday, July 12. Colonies of microcystis, the genus of cyanobacteria responsible for the recent spate of harmful algae blooms in Upstate New York water bodies, were visible in surface waters. Former Springfield Farmer Honored at Festival

At this year’s North Carolina Blueberry Festival in Burgaw, again host to 45,000 visitors, special recognition was awarded to Harold G. Huntington—former Springfield, New York pioneer blueberry farmer—who was represented by his surviving family, Robert G., Mary H. and John F. Huntington, VIP guests of Burgaw Mayor Olivia Newsom. This recognition comes on the 100th anniversary of Huntington’s start of America’s cultivated blueberry industry in 1923.…
