IN MEMORIAM:  Edward Schneider, 102;

Met, Married Huntington’s Chief Librarian

ONEONTA – Edward Schneider, 102, an educator whose career included working for the Huntington Memorial Library, where he met and married the chief librarian, passed away peacefully on Aug. 4, 2016 at the Fox Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 2, 1914, in Bovina Center, to Emil and Margaretha (Butler) Schneider, he was educated at Coulter Brook School and graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi.   He then graduated from the Oneonta Normal School (SUNY Oneonta) and taught at various one-room schoolhouses throughout the area. Edward was the last teacher at Bovina District No 1 (Maynard School) which closed its doors at the end of the school year in 1959.

He then taught the next few years in the Troy school district while studying library science at SUNY Albany. Returning to the area, Edward worked for the Huntington Library, where he met his wife, Mellicent, the chief librarian.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Mellicent; his brothers, Arnold and Carl, and his sister Lillian Hilson. Surviving are his nephews, James (Margaret) Hilson, Bovina Center, Thomas (Betty) Hilson, Bovina Center, and his nieces, Margaret Oelsner, Albuquerque, NM, and Marianne (Douglas) Brown, Boseman, Mont.
A graveside committal service will be at the convenience of the family at the Bovina Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington Memorial Library in his name.
