The automobile race against time in which the War Department is taking an active interest started from Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts today, Wednesday, and is to finish at Fort Lawton, Seattle, Washington on Saturday. If plans materialize, the last relay should reach its destination on Saturday. The time allowance for the race of 3,685.5 miles is 120 hours. The tour is under the auspices of the Yellowstone Park Association and is for the purpose of demonstrating the condition of the road across the country. The War Department has aided in mapping out the itinerary and has furnished the message which the couriers are to deliver. The message reached Kingston, New York a few minutes before 6 o’clock and the two cars representing the relay between that resort and Binghamton were in waiting with engines restless for the start. It was exactly 6:40 p.m. when the cars pulled out for Oneonta. The first car passed the Chestnut Street corner at 8:32 o’clock, too far ahead for many spectators to be in waiting. At the Pony Farm crossing the first car was halted by a freight train and the second car overtook the first. When the train was out of the way, on the cars sped and down the valley they fairly flew through Unadilla at 70 miles per hours, disappearing down the road in a cloud of dust.

The Oneonta Environmental Board is looking for a meeting site for the public to attend a hearing on proposed plans for a $70 million 35-megawatt wood burning power plant at the site of the former roundhouse. Members of the public and environmental experts have expressed concerns about water runoff, noise pollution and air quality impacts from the plant. According to Alderwoman Julie Carney the project is on the board’s agenda this Wednesday. “They’re trying to find a way to facilitate public comment rather than having citizens marching up and down Main Street with placards,” Board chair Dave Hutchinson said.
