IN MEMORIAM: Lamont ‘Monty’ Smith, 77;

“Monty” Smith

EDMESTON – Lamont “Monty” W. Smith 77, of Edmeston, passed away on Feb. 2, 2019, in Cooperstown.

Monty was born in October 1941 in New Berlin, the son of Bernard K and Edith (Wells) Smith. His childhood was spent in New Berlin. He was a 1959 graduate of New Berlin Central School.

He was employed by Scintilla, Kraft Foods, NYSEG, and for 25 years was a self-employed general contractor.  He later worked for the Oneonta Nursing Home.

He retired from Edmeston Central School as superintendent of buildings and grounds. During retirement he proudly served as an independent contractor with General Dynamics for years and through his work was able to give back to his country. Monty’s colleagues are grateful for his exemplary commitment to the organization.

On Aug. 2, 1983, Monty married Gail Mayne, who survives him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Lisa Brooks and her companion, Tim Standard, and Dean Smith and his companion, Editha Schmit; grandson Eric Smith; great-granddaughters Haley and Hanna; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Curtis Bronson; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Shadow.

He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Bernadine Bagg.

Monty was an avid bowler, golfer, hunter and played guitar at his church, Otsego County Fair and nursing homes.

He built his own home and pond in the back yard where he enjoyed hosting their annual Labor Day parties.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Burlington Flats Baptist Church.  The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Burlington Flats Baptist Church with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, 101 Arnold Road, Burlington Flats, NY 13315.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, LP, New Berlin.
