Another Vote for Josh Riley

Josh Riley has represented us admirably in the 19th Congressional District for two years. I was listening to a national news channel and the reporter said, “I talked to a representative of Upstate New York, Josh Riley, who had worked on the bipartisan Housing Bill.” The one the president refused to sign at the very last minute. Often the day-to-day workings of our representatives don’t make news; especially if the representative is from the minority party.

Here are a few highlights of Riley’s work. He helped draft sections of the bipartisan 21st Century Road to Housing Act passed by the House and Senate. Riley authored key provisions, including the Families First Housing Act, designed to prevent Wall Street investors from bulk buying single-family homes. He backed measures to lower housing costs, protect rural housing and cut red tape for developers.

Josh introduced the Keep the Lights Local Act to ban the foreign ownership of utilities. He spoke eloquently on behalf of his constituents at the Public Service Commission hearing in Oneonta against a proposed rate hike by NYSEG, which is foreign owned. He investigated the billing practices of Upstate utility companies. When they attempted to raise rates, he took them to court. It was the first time a member of Congress has ever stepped into a rate case to stop a utility from hiking prices.
