ALBANY – State Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, today hosted the Cooperstown High School Girls Basketball team and their coach Mike Niles in Albany where they were honored during the Senate session as the 2015 state Class C champions.

“The Cooperstown High School Girls Basketball team is made up of true trailblazers – capturing the school’s first state basketball title,” said Senator Seward.  “From the extra practices at the Clark Sports Center, to summer tournaments, to late nights at the Cooperstown High School gym, and, I’m certain, some time in neighborhood driveways shooting free throws, this team put the work in and the end result was a much sought after state title.”

Cooperstown defeated Northern Adirondack 61-34 in the New York State Class C championship on March 22, 2015 capping a 25-1 season.

The New York State Legislature recently adopted a legislative resolution honoring the Cooperstown Girls Basketball team which reads in part:

“Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and accomplishment, and Coach Mike Niles and  his  outstanding  athletes have  clearly made a contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their school.”

Senate resolution 1523 was sponsored by Senator Seward and adopted on April 22, 2015.  Assemblyman Bill Magee sponsored an identical resolution, assembly resolution 310, which was adopted on April 21, 2015.

The Cooperstown Girls Basketball team was also named a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Team for classroom excellence with a grade point average of 94.18.

“The Lady Hawkeyes truly epitomize the term student athlete.  They are terrific role models for other students, young basketball players who look up to them, and the community at-large,” Seward concluded.

Thank You Seward, Well Done!

Thank You Seward, Well Done! On Dec. 31, 2020, James L. Seward of Milford – everyone’s “Gentleman Jim” – retired from the New York State Senate, where he had served Otsego County since Jan. 1, 1986. Because of COVID-19, few of his constituents had the chance to say: Farewell – and thank you. When offered the opportunity, many of us – his fellow legislators, community leaders, top corporate executives and businesspeople, and citizens to whom he reached out and helped in time of need – have now done so in tributes that appear in this Special Edition – from The…
