Otego Thumps Oneonta on Mercy Rule

ONEONTA—Left-handed star Braeden Johnson of the Otego Retrievers threw a six-inning no-hitter in a mercy-rule 11-1 victory over the Oneonta Green Wave on Tuesday, June 27. Johnson struck out 12 batters and allowed only one walk in the American Legion District 6 game. Otego rode two key hits and three Oneonta fielding errors to score six runs in the first inning. JJ Benjamin went four-for-four at the plate for the Retrievers, smacking a double and driving in four runs. Shea Barber went two-for-three with an RBI. Pitcher Matthew Serrao made three hits, including a double and two RBI. Cameron Sitts hit an RBI double in the second inning for Oneonta’s only hit of the night.

Green Wave Plays Johnson City to a Tie

ONEONTA—The Oneonta Green Wave played Johnson City to a 5-5 tie before the American Legion game was called due to darkness on Wednesday, June 28. Oneonta overcame an early 4-0 deficit with a rally in the third and fourth innings. Brady Carr hit a two-RBI single with two outs in the third inning. Seamus Catella hit an RBI single in the fourth, immediately followed by a two-RBI triple from Asa Dugan to give Oneonta the lead. Johnson City made an unearned run in the fifth inning, tying the game at 5-5, where it would remain for the rest of the scheduled seven innings. The Green Wave moved to 4-5-1 for the season.

Outlaws Sweep Boonville

ONEONTA—The Oneonta Outlaws swept a home doubleheader against the Boonville Lumberjacks on Wednesday, June 28. Oneonta overcame an early 2-0 deficit to win game one, 5-4. Joseph Trombley earned the win, striking out two over four innings, and Ryan Myles earned the save. Logan Haskell hit a double and drove in a run; Dakota Britt hit a triple and an RBI. Oneonta held off Boonville to eke out a 9-8 victory in game two. Christopher Ubner, Connor Roche and JJ Devito each had two RBI. Myles earned his second save in the final inning. Justin Decastro struck out 10 batters in the first five and two-thirds innings.

Dugan Leads Green Wave in Broome Tournament Opener

BINGHAMTON—Asa Dugan threw a complete game in the Oneonta Green Wave’s 5-4 victory over Utica Adrean in the opening round of the Broome County Tournament on Thursday, June 29. Dugan struck out two and allowed one walk and eight hits. Utica led off the final inning with runners on first and third and no outs, but Dugan induced three flyouts to preserve the win. The Oneonta offense scored three times in the third inning, powered by Brady Carr and Jameson Brown. Aidan Gelbsman made a key hit in the fifth, driving home Owen Burnsworth as an insurance run. Burnsworth made two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Adam Champlin added an RBI double in the second inning. The Green Wave moved to 5-5-1 for the season and will face the Brockville (Ontario) Bunnies in the next round.

Outlaws Drop Road Game at Watertown

WATERTOWN—The Oneonta Outlaws blew a 6-3 lead at the end of the fifth inning and lost 7-6 to the Watertown Rapids on Thursday, June 29. Christopher Ubner of Fly Creek pitched the first three innings, striking out one. Anthony Aleman, RJ Latkowski and Logan Waldschmidt combined to strike out three in the remainder of the game. Jack Hopko hit a double and batted in two runs for Oneonta. Logan Haskell went two-for-three with an RBI.

Outlaws Drop Home Doubleheader

ONEONTA—The Saugerties Stallions swept the Oneonta Outlaws in a doubleheader at Damaschke Field on Saturday, July 1, bringing them to a five-game winning streak. Both games of the doubleheader were seven-inning contests. The Stallions jumped to a 7-0 lead after two innings of the first game. The Outlaws mounted a strong comeback attempt with a run in the fifth inning and four in the sixth, but Saugerties reliever Izaiah Ayala stranded two runners in the sixth and went one-two-three in the seventh for his first save of the summer. The Stallions won 8-5, with right-handed starter Marko Gibbons earning the win with six strikeouts in three innings. Connor Roche delivered a three-RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for the Outlaws.

The Stallions scored all three of their runs in the second game in the top of the third. Oneonta scored once in the fifth with an RBI single from shortstop Ryan Leary, but strong pitching performances from Saugerties held the Outlaws scoreless for the rest of the game. Jarod Wade went three-for-three for Oneonta in the loss. Right-handed reliever Sean Dertinger pitched a no-hitter with one walk in the final two innings.

Green Wave Washes Out of Broome County Tournament

BINGHAMTON—The Oneonta Green Wave lost its final two games of the Broome County Tournament on Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1. Oneonta won the opening game against Utica Adrean on Thursday, June 29. They faced an early 8-1 deficit in their Friday game against the Brockville (Ontario) Bunnies and managed to tie the game 8-8 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Brockville responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning and held off strong Oneonta scoring chances in the sixth and seventh to win 11-9. Cam Sitts led the Green Wave offense, contributing a pair of hits and three RBI.

The Green Wave had to win on Saturday against the Clinton County Mariners to advance. Clinton broke away with three runs each in the third and fourth innings. Oneonta managed only four hits in the face of a tough pitching squad. The Mariners won 8-1. All tournament action on Sunday, July 2 was canceled due to weather, and the Mariners were crowned champions as a result of their undefeated 3-0 record in pool play. The Green Wave dropped to 5-7-1 for the season.

Outlaws Fall to Glens Falls

GLENS FALLS—The Oneonta Outlaws dropped a league game 3-1 against the Glens Falls Dragons on Sunday, July 2. Oneonta opened the scoring in the fifth inning when Logan Waldschmidt reached first on a fielding error. He advanced to third on a double by Christopher Baillargeon and scored on a catcher’s error. The Dragons scored three times in the bottom of the sixth, all on fielding errors and a wild pitch. Waldschmidt was saddled with the loss after striking out five and giving up a walk and three runs in six innings. The Outlaws moved to 8-14 for the season.

Outlaws Defeat Albany Dutchmen

ONEONTA—The Oneonta Outlaws eked out a 2-1 victory over the Albany Dutchmen in a home contest on Tuesday, July 4. First baseman Ethan Duda scored the tying run on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shortstop Ryan Leary advanced to third on a pair of errors in the bottom of the eighth inning. DH Anthony Barone drove Leary home with a single and closer Ryan Packard held the Dutchmen hitless in the top of the ninth. Starting pitcher Kyle Mahady struck out eight batters in five and two-thirds innings.
