ONEONTA – Dr. Franklin (Frank) Chambers will join SUNY Oneonta as vice president for student development, effective July 1, the college announced this afternoon.

He succeeds Dr. Steven Perry, who is retiring.

Dr. Chambers has more than 20 years of experience working in higher education, most recently as vice president for student affairs at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md.   Coincidentally, SUNY Oneonta announced Tuesday that its provost, Maria Thompson, was leaving to become Coppin’s next president.

Chambers has served as a panelist for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and as a presenter and panelist at the Second National Summit on Black Greek-Letter Organizations, A Critical Time for Change:  Strengthening the Legacy, Part III, at the annual conference of NASPA, an association serving student affairs administrators in higher education.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University at Northridge, and a master’s in educational administration and Ph.D. in organizational communications at Howard University.
