A late afternoon thunderstorm brought with it heavy rain and strong winds which brought down a large tree limb on Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, near the New York Pizzeria. The limb fell on top of an SUV and one person was seen being loaded into an ambulance. The road is currently closed with traffic being directed to side streets and at least one power line is currently down. (Larissa Ryan/AllOtsego.com)

West Oneonta needs a guardrail

On Friday April 22, for the second time in two years, we had a car drive off State Route 23, crash through our fence, and land in the culvert on the corner of our property in the Hamlet of West Oneonta.

The first incident was due to distracted driving. The most recent incident was due to a medical issue. Our five-year-old and dog play every day in the yard where both of these accidents occurred.

We acknowledge that the medical issue that caused the most recent accident was nobody’s fault and commend our local emergency squad for their hard work. Extracting the car and driver from the culvert was not an easy task.

The top of the car needed to be cut off for the driver to be extracted.

At left, Sgt. Ralph Pajerski, Oneonta Police Dept., surveys the scene as firefighter Ron Wamsley sweeps up debris around a vehicle rollover that blocked Chestnut Street in Oneonta for nearly an hour. Sgt. Pajerski reported that the driver was momentarily distracted when she put down a tissue. She then allegedly struck a parked car resulting in the accident. Closes NY-28 to Traffic

Cooperstown Fire Chief Jim Tallman hurries to the scene of an accident outside of Bocca Osteria on Route 28, just south of Cooperstown, a few minutes ago. The accident happened when a car pulled out of the Bocca parking lot and was struck by a vehicle coming up 28. . There were no injuries, but traffic is being diverted. (Ian Austin/AllOTSEGO.com)

In Crash; No Injuries

ONEONTA – An Oneonta City School bus with 25 kids aboard was involved in a two-car accident this afternoon, but no injuries were reported, according to Acting Police Chief Douglas Brenner.

The scene was cleared just after 4 p.m. and although no tickets were issued at the scene, an investigation is ongoing.
