The Arc Otsego Receives $10K To Provide Critical Financial Aid

ONEONTA—The Arc Otsego was awarded a $10,000.00 grant in December from the Community Foundation of Otsego County to establish its “Essential Needs Fund.” Officials said this funding will provide critical financial assistance to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are experiencing hardship and are at risk of housing instability.

According to a press release, through The Arc Otsego’s Supported Employment Program, many individuals live independently in apartments and homes across Otsego County while receiving job coaching supports from The Arc Otsego out in the community.

“While maintaining this independence is a significant point of pride and progress, the rising cost of rent, utilities, and basic living expenses continues to threaten their ability to remain securely housed, and with increases in electric, gas, and oil, keep the lights on and heat running,” the press release reads. “A single unexpected increase in an electric bill or groceries, or a shortfall in rent can force individuals, many of whom live on fixed or limited incomes, to choose between essential needs.”

Officials said the grant will allow The Arc Otsego to distribute direct financial support for urgent housing-related expenses, including rent and utility bills. Assistance will be provided on a case-by-case basis following a short application process, ensuring support is fair, timely, and tailored to each individual’s situation. By addressing financial crises before they escalate, the project will help prevent homelessness, protect health and safety, and allow individuals to remain connected to their jobs, communities, and support networks.

“This funding from the Community Foundation of Otsego County provides financial support, and works to ensure that hardship doesn’t undermine the independence and progress of the people we support,” said Faith Tiemann, chief marketing officer at The Arc Otsego.

“Something as simple as a temporary gap in rent support can put someone’s housing, and their wellbeing, at risk. This grant allows us to step in at the right moment and protect stability, dignity, and community connection,” Tiemann explained.

Sarah Paulino, assistant director of employment services added, “Many of the people we support fall between the cracks; they may need extra help but are unable to qualify for additional services or financial assistance. Programs like this offer vital support, and anything that strengthens the independence of people with disabilities is a win.”
