160 YEARS AGO
It is well known that a year ago the village of Cooperstown suffered to the extent of perhaps $20,000 on account of the prevalence of small pox — which was first contracted by one of our citizens in New York City. It nearly destroyed one trade for the entire winter; and put the county and the village to a large expense. To the mild type of the disease and the active precautions taken by the authorities may be attributed the fact that but few deaths occurred. It is to be hoped that the legislative members from this county will do what they can to aid the passage of some law which will place the sanitary affairs of our great seaport town (New York City) in better hands and under an improved system.

“Geographic & Military Museum.” We have received the first number of a paper published in Albany, by Samuel R. Brown, under this title. We would recommend it to the attention of the public as worthy of patronage. In the meantime, we give our readers his very eccentric Dedication. “To the brave and patriotic, who are willing to expend blood or treasure in defence of the Republic; no matter in what state or on what river residing, or to what party or sect belonging, the Museum is most respectfully dedicated – not with a humble ‘s’il vous plait,’ for patronage, but with full confidence that it will deserve and command it. I shall conduct this paper according to my own notions of propriety. The seductive influences of smiles, frowns, friendship, resentment, gratitude, party-feeling, local attachments and state interest, shall not divert the Museum from its object…the national interest. After this brief explanation, it will be useless for anyone to approach me with a collusive wink of the eye and a whisper.”

Action is necessary, spirited action, on the part of all those opposed to any and all of the projects to divide the County (Otsego County). Some among many reasons which go to oppose a division are that in small counties, the burden of taxation is heavier than in large; and that proximity to the county courts is calculated to increase litigation. Remonstrances, we understand, are in circulation, or about to be, which all are requested to sign who are opposed to a division.

On Thursday morning last, between the hours of 3 and 4 o’clock, our citizens were aroused from their slumbers by the alarming cry of fire, which proved to be in the building occupied by Taylor and Graves as a Tailor’s and Barber’s shop, and had made such progress before the alarm became general, that it was impossible to save the building. The end of Messrs. Cook and Craft’s store, which stood about ten feet east, was several times on fire, but by the prompt exertions of the citizens in hastening supplies of water, and the well-directed application of it through the fire engine, united with the calmness of the weather, its desolating progress was arrested, and the whole range of buildings east to the corner saved from impending destruction. The shutters and windows in Col. Stranahan’s brick house, facing the fire, were burnt out; this building formed a barrier to the progress of the fire westward. The Ladies of the village deserve much praise for the promptitude and alacrity with which they volunteered their aid to the general exertions. They joined the ranks at an early hour, and continued during the whole time of danger, to render every assistance in their power.
