SCHENEVUS – Dorothy R. Beams, 89, the last mayor of the former Village of Schenevus, passed away peacefully Dec. 4, 2015, at Kingsway Manor in Schenectady.

In addition to serving as mayor in 1991-94, when the village was dissolved into the Town of Maryland, she was a trustee and village treasurer.

She was born May 10, 1926, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Charles and Mabel (Skillen) VanCuren.  She married Frederick E. Beams on Oct. 10, 1948, in Oneonta.  He predeceased her on Sept. 3, 1987.

Dorothy was the secretary for the Andrew S. Draper Central School in Schenevus for over 25 years until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of the Schenevus Fire Department Auxiliary, served on the Schenevus school board and was the Program Director for the Town of Maryland Young at Heart Senior Citizen’s Club.

Survivors include four children, Linda (Jim) Hurley of Oneonta, David (Wendy) Beams of Sarasota, Fla., Sandra (Jim) Lifgren of Santee, Calif., and Susan (John) Risler of Albany; nine  grandchildren, Tiffany (Mark) Carr, David Hurley, Kali (Angelo) Lopipero, Lindsey Beams, Christopher Lifgren, Michael Lifgren, Matthew (Kelly) Risler, Patrick Risler, and Anne Risler; two great-grandchildren, Brady and Kylie Carr; five sisters-in-law, Grace VanCuren, Eleanor VanCuren, Marjorie Scale, Sharon Campbell, Jane Beams; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service at the Schenevus Cemetery will be announced at a later time in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Young a Heart Senior Citizens Club, 272 Valder Road, Schenevus, NY 12155.
