Yesterday, in presence of the Commissioners, and a number of other scientific gentlemen, the machinery of the steam vessel of war Fulton the First, was put in motion by the force of steam for the first time. We are much gratified to state, that its operation exceeded the most sanguine expectation.
A new diving machine by Mr. Melville, the inventor, has descended twice in the Seine River near the Pont Royal, to the depth of from 10 to 20 feet, and passed 56 minutes at the bottom. He took with him two swans, two ducks and some bread and wine. He let loose the aquatic animals while under water, went from the Pont Neof to the swimming school and came out dressed as usual without being in the least wet. The machine has the form of an egg. It is not bulky. It contains only five cubic feet of air. This air is prepared in such a manner that pressure can do it no harm, but it is kept pure and fresh.

A special meeting of the village trustees was held Monday evening at which time Policeman Southworth was called in and ordered to enforce strictly the laws relating to the speed of automobiles; also the law relating to the proper lighting of vehicles left on the streets at night, and the traffic laws relative to driving and stopping on the right side of the street. The residents of Pioneer, Lake, Church, Pine and River Streets, having petitioned for oil, the clerk was authorized to order a quantity sufficient for oil treatment on those streets. The matter of certain stores occupying too much of the sidewalk with the display of their wares was discussed and remedial measures considered. The trolley company also came up for discussion in connection with the habit of parking their cars on Main Street, thus obstructing the view of auto drivers and others. No action was taken. The construction of the new railroad passenger station at Cooperstown will be delayed until late in the summer or early fall as the engineers find that the land is several feet lower than the railroad tracks at Main Street requiring about 15,000 cubic yards of earth to bring the station up to the desired level. An expenditure of $100,000 for the structure is contemplated.

In Cooperstown—A singing group called “The Barnstormers” sang at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday. This group from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania get together about four times a year to entertain at various parts of New England. They are just a group of people who love to sing and have rehearsal the night before a concert. They travel around mostly on weekends and besides singing also visit places of interest in the vicinity where they are entertaining.

The lengthiest review process since the new Zoning Law went into effect one year ago was concluded last week when village planning officials unanimously approved the site development plan for the Bassett Clinic project. The project was also granted architectural approval. “This is the logical conclusion of a very careful process that recognized the issues that needed to be addressed, said Bassett Hospital President William Streck, M.D. “The vote indicates the level of confidence the Planning Board has in the project,” he added.
