IN MEMORIAM: Edward Hogan, 83;
Honored With Scouting’s Top Award
ONEONTA – Edward Paul (Papa) Hogan, 83, a city native and an honored participant in the Boy Scout movement, passed away unexpectedly Aug. 16, 2017.
A life-long resident of Oneonta, he was born Feb. 15, 1934, to Raymond Francis and Madeline (Egglestine) Hogan. He graduated from Oneonta High School, where he sang in school musicals and state choir competitions.
Working at The City Drug Store, he met his future bridge, Nancy (Southern). They were married on Sept. 11, 1960. After years in the Men’s Department of Bresee’s, he began his 27-year career as a SUNY Oneonta custodian.
He was a three-degree member and treasurer of the Knights of Columbus for many years. He enjoyed calling and serving Texas Hots with Nancy on Bingo nights.
In 1972 he became assistant scout master of Troop 111, sponsored by St. Mary’s Church. A Boy Scout leader for 44 years, he held positions with the troop, district, and council, serving on several committees as a member and chairman. For over 30 years he was the camp commissioner at the Crumhorn Mountain camp.
Upon nomination by the local council and with the approval of the National Court of Honor, he was honored for distinguished service by receiving the Silver Beaver Award. The Silver Beaver is an award given to those who implement the Scouting program and who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service.
He enjoyed crochet making and donating afghans, hats, scarves and mittens to Fox Hospital and Family Services for decades. Countless crochet hats were sported by Scout Leaders at the winter camporee, a different color each year.
He enjoyed retirement and his grandchildren. Always a fan at OHS football and baseball games, the teams received crocheted hats and mittens for the cheerleaders too!
Ed volunteered with the Fox Hospital Auxiliary for over 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Nancy; daughter Linda (Scott) McAdams; son Barry and his fiancee Tracy Cates; granddaughter Kayla (Adam) Bouton; grandson Kasey, granddaughter Elizabeth, great-granddaughter Lily Bouton, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ed is predeceased by sisters Cathrine, Mildred (Fred) Cannistra, Mary Agnes and Gertrude (Hogan) Crannell; brothers Raymond, Jr., James, and Joseph (Jean) Hogan.
Calling hours will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
Due to the closure of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church for renovations the Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Saint James Episcopal Church, with Rev. David Mickiewicz officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you volunteer your time to one of Ed’s passions or a monetary donation to the Fox Hospital Auxiliary.
