IN MEMORIAM: Elizabeth ‘Sue’ Avery, 98;
Worked In Publishing In NYC And Locally
ONEONTA – Elizabeth Huddleston “Sue” Avery, 98, who worked for newspapers and publishing in the New York metropolitan area and locally, passed away Nov. 9, 2017.
She was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Greenwich, Conn., to Thomas Oakley Woolf II and Judith Griffen Woolf. She was a 1938 graduate of Greenwich Academy.
She was a reporter for the Greenwich Time daily newspaper and worked as editor and proofreader thereafter, latterly for McGraw-Hill Book Company and Cambridge University Press.
From 1968 to 1980, she worked for the Village Printer in Laurens producing annual tourist publications for Otsego and Delaware counties and the 10-week summer weekly newspaper, Tocsin.
Her first marriage in 1945, to Emile Schurmacher, ended in divorce. She married William Lee Avery in 1950. They lived on Long Island from 1950 to 1967, when they moved to Franklin.
She was a grateful member of St. Paul’s Church, Franklin, and served on the vestry for many years. She spent seven years traveling in her motor home and moved to Oneonta in 1997.
Sue was predeceased by her husband, William; sister, Priscilla Stevenson of Hartford, Conn.; brother, Thomas O. Woolf III of Ridgefield Conn.; daughter, Susan Clark-Johnson of Paradise Valley, Ariz., former publisher of The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Ariz., and son, William R. Avery of Los Angeles, Calif.
She is survived by her seven children, Lee (wife, Laura), Anne-Louise, Caroline, William (wife, Lien), Judith (husband, Sean O’Neill), Daniel and John (wife, Jennie); 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-granddaughters; and a step-great- granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 2, at St. Paul’s Church, Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Church, Franklin.
