Peter Molinari, Jr.

ONEONTA – Peter Paul Molinari Jr., 72, former longtime owner of the landmark Palace Cigar on Main Street, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, at Bassett Hospital.

He was born on July 2, 1946, in Albany, the son of Peter Paul Sr. and Frances (Croshaw) Molinari.

Peter attended SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Albany, earning his bachelor’s degree in business.

He served in the military during the Vietnam War and earned a silver star for his service.

In addition to Palace Cigar, he founded the Rose & Laurel Bookshop, and was involved in other stores downtown over the course of his career.

When he was able, he could be found walking his dog, playing poker, or on the golf course.

Peter is survived by his daughter, Lindsay Maynard (Mark); and two grandsons, Alex and Leo Maynard; his sisters, Susanna Molinari of San Rafael, Calif., Mary Anne Nugent of Suffern, Diane Molinari of Latham and Joanne (Art) Haber of Kingston; his former wife, Janet Potter; his longtime friend and housemate, Cheryl Carter; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, Frances, in 1952; and his father, Peter Molinari Sr., in 1992.

Friends are invited to greet the family from 3 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Greater Oneonta Historical Society or Susquehanna SPCA.
