Film Society Lives, Relaunched

With ‘All The President’s Men’

COOPERSTOWN – The Film Society of Cooperstown returns to the Village Hall’s ballroom, 22 Main St., with “All the President’s Men” at 7 p.m. Jan. 16.

Supported by the Friends of the Village Library, this season’s schedule was curated by Bill Francis, researcher and writer at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and Jeff Katz, former Mayor of Cooperstown and author.

Started by Joey Katz in early 2018, Film Society presented an eclectic series of movies, some familiar, some under the radar, during the winter months. Every two weeks, more and more people turned out for free films, refreshments and discussion.

“When I heard Joey was leaving the area, I asked Jeff if we should keep Film Society going,” said Francis. “I attended all the movies in the first season and it was great. It would have been a shame to see it end after one year.”

“Film Society was such a welcome addition in January, February and March,” said Katz. “A group of us would get together on Main St. before the movie, and then head over to the Ballroom. It was fun to see people out and about in the middle of the week, and, with every movie, the audience grew.”

Francis and Katz have created a six film series, two movies per month, with some special guest speakers. Their hope is to add more as the season progresses. All movies will be shown in the Ballroom at Village

Here’s the schedule:

  • Jan. 16, All the President’s Men (1976), with an after film discussion led by Will Walker, associate producer of history, Cooperstown Graduate Program, SUNY Oneonta
  • Jan. 30, Duck Soup (1933), with Buster Keaton short
  • Feb. 13 – There Will Be Blood (2007)
  • Feb. 20 – Moonrise Kingdom (2012), with special guest, co-producer Molly Cooper
  • March 6 – The Killers (1946)
  • March 20 – The Last Picture Show (1971)
