Cryptologist Tech Shannon Kent, Pine Plains,
Mourned In Congressman Delgado Statement
A Navy sailor originally from Dutchess County, on the eastern end of Otsego County’s 19th Congressional District, is one of three Americans killed after a suicide bomber triggered a fiery explosion Wednesday in northern Syria, the Poughkeepsie Journal is reporting.
Chief Cryptologic Technician Shannon M. Kent, 35, a 2001 graduate of the Pine Plains Central School District, “provides an example to all of us with her dedication and sacrifice for our country,” U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado, R-19th, said in a statement released a few minutes ago.
“Shannon M. Kent devoted her life to protecting our country and defending democracy—this is a terrible tragedy and heartbreaking loss,” Delgado said. “…Her memory will live on because she defined what true service means. My thoughts and prayers are with her children, husband, and the rest of her family and friends at this difficult time.”
Kent was killed Jan. 16, 2019, in Manbij, Syria, while assigned to Cryptologic Warfare Activity 66 (CWA 66), supporting Combined Joint Task Force/Operation Inherent Resolve, the Navy reported.”She graduated in 2001,” Tara Grieb, Stissing Mountain Junior and Senior High School principal told the Poughkeepsie Journal. “We are proud of her and her service. We support her family 100 percent.”
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Friday that flags are to be flown at half-staff on all state government buildings in honor of Kent until her funeral.
“Chief Petty Officer Kent stepped up to serve her country and dedicated herself to a life of service, following in the footsteps of her father Colonel Stephen J. Smith of the state police,” Cuomo said. “We owe her our eternal gratitude for her selfless dedication and sacrifice. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones.”
