Bishop Rededicates

Renovated St. Mary’s

The Most Rev. Edward B. Scharfenberger, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Albany, is in Oneonta this evening for the rededication of St. Mary’s Church after the completion of $1.5 million in renovations.  A capacity crowd of 378 parishioners (top photo) witnessed the bishop (right photo), with Father David Miskiewizc, pastor, at his side, as he blessed the building anew and asked worshippers to recommit themselves to the church’s teachings.   In an earlier interview, Father Miskiewizc recounted how the project had begun as a simple effort to install restrooms, but the planning process brought the realization that more extensive work, including new lighting and the addition of a chapel for daily masses, would better serve the parish.  After the dedication, Bishop Scharfenberger celebrated mass, and a reception was planned later this evening at St. Mary’s Parish Center across Walnut Street from the church.  (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
