Your Votes Are Vitally Important

How fortunate we are to live in a country that is a democracy. Next week, on Election Day, be sure to exercise your right to vote. Do it for yourself, do it for your community, or do it for whatever reason that is important to you. Just vote!

Specifically, in Otsego County, next week we will be voting to fill the position of Otsego County clerk. This position is the keeper of records for land transactions and court proceedings in Otsego County, as well as managing the Department of Motor Vehicles on behalf of New York State. If you have ever bought or sold a house or real property or participated in any real property transaction in Otsego County—and because it may have included in the chain of title, a mortgage lien, a judgment lien or been the subject of a foreclosure, or were involved with any of a myriad of other types of land transactions—this position is relevant to you. If you ever had any sort of communication or transaction with DMV, then this position is relevant to you.

The candidates for this position are MacGuire Benton and Jennifer Basile. I believe they are both qualified for this position. Mr. Benton brings to the table about a decade’s worth of experience in various public and private positions in and near Cooperstown. I spoke with Mr. Benton recently and found him to be smart, knowledgeable, energetic and accomplished.

Ms. Basile is the current deputy county clerk. I am in the County Clerk’s Office frequently and have found Ms. Basile to be knowledgeable, courteous and helpful.

So, whoever is your preference, be sure to vote on Election Day!
