driver arrested after
Laurens bicyclist
dies from accident

A Mount Vision man was arrested Saturday, July 3, for leaving the scene of a hit-and-run accident that killed a Laurens bicyclist.

Michael Goodspeed, 32, is charged with second degree vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident, according to a New York State trooper press release.

The bicyclist, Michael Vargas, 37, was hit on state Route 205, near the intersection of Timer Road.

  1. Maximum sentence?? It may have been an actual accident. I was told he thought he hit a deer. Which with pouring rain and it being dark out, it is a possibility. Yes i would have stopped to see but unless you’re in that situation you don’t know! Very sad situation for both families!

  2. Even if you hit a deer you are supposed to stop and call 911. Tell me you hit something big and your not going to stop to see what kind of damage to car. Come on now be realistic. The only time people keep going is when they know what they did and panic.

  3. To the ones saying “thought he hit a deer” that’s bullshit. The man who died was on a bike, how can you not know you at least hit a bike.. i also heard he was an alcoholic so he probably fled because he was drunk. Stop making excuses for this kid.
