5 Hartwick Profs Take

To National Airwaves

Beginning Monday, Local Researchers Will
Be Aired Daily On NPR’s ‘Academic Minute’

ONEONTA – Next week, when you here “The Academic Minute” on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” you may be hearing some familiar voices:  Hartwick College faculty will take to the air before a nationwide audience offering insight into what they do best.

President Margaret L. Drugovich, Chief Marketing Officer Monica Calzolari and Media Relations Manager David Lubdell have been talking about the idea since last year, said Lubdell.

When they learned of “The Weekly Takeover” option, where a single college can highlight its talent daily for a week, they became particularly enthusiastic, he said.

First, Hartwick had to seek out interested faculty, and pitch topics to “The Academic Minute” staff.   Once the five were picked by “The Academic Minute,” the scripts were drafted, edited, recorded and re-recorded on Oyaron Hill to meet the program’s professional standards.

Next Monday through Friday, a Hartwick faculty member will discuss new research in his or her field of study, as follows:

  • Ryan Ceresola, assistant professor of sociology, will talk about defining and dealing with corruption at the federal level in “The Curious Case of Correcting Corruption.”
  • Laurel Elder, professor of political science and Women’s & Gender Studies coordinator, offers her insights on “Public Opinion and Presidential Candidate Spouses.”
  • Diane M. Paige, professor in the arts and Department of Music chair, discusses the role of play in the college classroom in “On the Power of Play.”
  • Stefanie Rocknak, Philosophy Department chair, will debate whether art is better because it is new in “The Cult of the New.”
  • Stanley K. Sessions, professor of biology, will shine a light on how salamanders can regenerate hearts as well as limbs in “How to Mend a Broken Heart.”

At a later date, Stephanie Carr, assistant professor of biology, will also appear,  discussing “Genomic Studies of Hard-to-Grow Microbes.”

The one-minute segments air twice daily, at 7:30 a.m. and 3:56 p.m., hosted by Dr. Lynn Pasquerella, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Which Hartwick professor who will speak on what day will be announced Friday.

Locally, the “The Academic Minute” is broadcast by WAMC/Northeast Public Radio on 90.3 FM and heard on dozens of stations across the US and Canada at www.InsideHigherEd.com, or download the WAMC app.
