At Oneonta’s 2 Colleges,

Fewer Rapes Than Most

ONEONTA – A new U.S. Department of Education report on rapes and “fondling” cases among the 45 Upstate colleges puts both SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College in the bottom third.

SUNY Oneonta tied for 30th, with four rapes reported in 2017 and two in 2016, and one fondling each year.

Hartwick College tied for 36th with three rapes reports each year, and two fondlings in 2017 and one in 2016.

Oneonta (enrollment 6,358) scored more than one per 1,000 students, and Hartwick (1,201) two per thousand.

The local SUNY ties with two other SUNY campuses, Brockport and Geneseo, and Jamestown Community College.  Hartwick tied with Robert Wesleyan College Rochester.

Number One on the list was Wells College in Aurora, with 29 rapes reported in 2016 compared to one the year before; two fondlings both years.  The 29 translates into 59 per 1,000 at the 488-student college.

Cornell was ranked #2.
