IN MEMORIAM: Elmer L. Baldwin, 84;

In  82nd Airborne, Worked For County

CHERRY VALLEY – Elmer Lee Baldwin, 84, who worked for the county Highway Department for a quarter-century, passed away Oct. 14, 2015, at the Folts Home, Herkimer, where he had lived for a year.

He was born in New Lisbon on March 20, 1931, to Claude H and Bertha (Porath) Baldwin.  He married Vivian Myers on Sept. 21, 1957, in the Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley; she predeceased him July 17, 2014.

Elmer attended Middlefield and Cherry Valley Central schools. He served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, in 1951-54, achieving the rank of sergeant.

He was employed by the Town of Cherry Valley for 13 years, then joined the county department, where he spent 25 years.  He was a member of the Cherry Valley Fire Department and American Legion Post 1360, Cherry Valley.

A past member of the Cherry Valley Historical Association, he enjoyed collecting guns, and restoring tractors, small engines and woodworking.

Survivors include his sisters: Pat Moore, Sally (Duane) Anthony, sisters-in-law: Lorraine Baldwin, Jane Crapser, brother-in-law Donald Meyers, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by sister Mable Vogelien and brothers Harold (Pug) Baldwin, Claude Baldwin, and Clarence (Butch) Baldwin.

Graveside funeral services with military honors will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, with Rev. Terry Brandt officiating.  Burial will follow.
