Wives and Husbands—With a wife comes a certain loss of freedom, which is irksome to willful natures. This, a man, who is a very short-sighted creature, never thinks of until after the subject of his love is his. Waking thoroughly to the consciousness that he is a married man, he finds in his house a person who has an absolute claim on his attention, his time, his affection and his services. He is surrounded by new conditions. All his movements must start from a new direction. In France, there is a saying that “tobacco is the tomb of love.”—French love, probably. In America, business is the tomb of love. It is hard if not impossible for the two great passions to live in the heart at the same time. It is as difficult to love woman and mammon as it is to serve God and mammon. The love of a man for his wife must be the grand, enduring all subordinate passion of his life, or woman is defrauded of her right.

The Athletics have our thanks for a complimentary ticket to witness their games of Base Ball—but we must decline going in on a pass. Although we carry an accident policy, we do not know that it covers the possibility of being killed by one of those stone-like balls with which the game is now played; and, if “in” on a pass, no damages could be recovered of the Association in case of severe accident. Thanks, Parson, and no offense intended, but we prefer to pay, under the circumstances.
All the good that can be achieved by Sunday Schools and the Y.M.C.A. Association can be counteracted by evil influences surrounding a large class of boys and for girls who are allowed by their parents to be out on the public streets at a late hour of the night. It is the ruin of many of them.

Expansion of National Youth Administration out-of-school work project, providing preparatory work experience for employment in fields essential to the national defense, is the objective of a meeting of NYA district directors recently called by Karl D. Hesley, administrator for New York State. Expansion of NYA community work centers, such as the one at Hartwick Seminary, now employ 2,500 young men and women a month, and it is the object of the directors to enlarge this to a point where between 4,000 and 5,000 additional young people are being served. Training of the 56 boys now enrolled at Hartwick Seminary includes dairy, poultry, general and truck farming, farm mechanics, blacksmith forge work, electric and acetylene welding, and truck driving.
