The Lecture—There was a large gathering at Bowne Hall on Thursday evening of last week to listen to the popular poet Saxe as he discoursed wittily and learnedly of “Poets and Poetry.” There was a natural curiosity to hear a poet’s opinion of his own family—and his clever hits at a large class who imagine themselves at least fifth cousins. Of course there were many witty things said, especially of the would-be poets—some of which were lost on a large portion of the audience, not from the lack of ability to appreciate the lecturer, but from his lack of voice—and that perhaps, partly the result of his jolting ride from Colliersville. The lecture was beautifully written, and much of it very instructive—especially his remarks on the leading English and American poets of the present generation. The lecture was happily closed with the recitation of two of Saxe’s own well-known poems—“The Yankee” and “The Proud Miss McBride.”

Workers lowered the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) magnet into place on Monday, December 17 at Bassett Hospital. The 20,000 pound TESLA magnet is part of the most advanced diagnostic medical equipment available. MRI is used extensively is diagnosing diseases of the brain and spine, but nearly every part of the body may be studied with MRI. MRI allows physicians to view organs through the use of two natural forces: magnetic fields and radio waves. When a patient is placed within the strong magnetic field of the MRI system and radio waves are emitted around the body part under examination, millions of atoms in the patient’s body react to those waves. A powerful antenna picks up these signals and sends them to the computer which translates them into sharp images.
