Missing Woman Found

PIERSTOWN – The elderly woman reported missing yesterday in the Town of Otsego has been located, state police report.  Belle L. Lord, 89, was found in good condition and is with family.

Richard L. Hanson

SPRINGFIELD – Richard Lee Hanson, a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War,  retired school teacher and farmer, passed away following a valiant battle with cancer Wednesday night, Oct. 18, 2017, at his home in the Town of Springfield with his family by his side.  He was 73.

Born March 30, 1944, at Bassett Hospital, he was the son of Lester Hans and Ellamae Jessie (Myers) Hanson.  A gifted athlete, Dick attended Cooperstown Central School where he excelled in football, skiing, basketball and track.

Husband, Four Children Survive Her

COOPERSTOWN – Terri Ann Smith, 60, a mother of four well known through waitressing in local restaurants, died Tuesday at her home on Route 28 in Pierstown, surrounded by her family.

Born in Ilion on May 28, 1956, Terri was the daughter of David Hribar and Betty (Bachanas) Hribar.    Her father worked at the Remington Arms plant in Ilion, but later moved his family back to the Hribar property on Fork Shop Road.  Terri graduated from Cooperstown Central School in 1974 and married Victor D. Smith on Oct. 18, 1975.

COOPERSTOWN – Raymond F. Key Sr., 80, the Pierstown farmer who for the past 14 years has been a state-licensed local wildlife nuisance control operator, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at home after a long battle with cancer.

Born May 13, 1935, in the Town of Richfield, Ray was one of five children of Frederick and Mabel (Sullivan) Key.  He attended Leonardsville and Cooperstown Central Schools. On Sept. 30, 1956, he married Bernice Bailey and they had one son, Raymond E. Key, Jr.

Ray spent most of his life in farming on the family dairy farm on Pierstown Road.   Since 2001, he was licensed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation Department as a wildlife control operator, assigned to Otsego and surrounding counties.

PIERSTOWN – Mildred Josephine Wedderspoon, a Pierstown mainstay for seven decades and first-hand witness to a rural lifestyle that is no more, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, July 2, 2015, at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown.  She was 103.

Mildred was born in New York City Jan. 23, 1912, a daughter of Czechoslovakian immigrants, Joseph and Agnus (Balvin) Stadler.

Raised in Mount Kisco, Mildred was introduced to this area by a friend whose son attended Hyde Bay Camp for Boys.  She met her future husband, Ford Dana Wedderspoon, and they married in October 1945.  Mr. Wedderspoon died in 1955 but Mildred loved the area and remained in Wedderspoon Hollow  for the next 60 years.
