Is the policy of the Administration “Peace” on a fair and liberal basis? The great majority of the people, North and South, earnestly desire Peace; but can the rulers at Washington and Richmond agree on terms? Peace on the basis of the “extermination of slavery” appears to be the program of the Administration. The abandonment of slavery was insisted on by Mr. Lincoln before the election; and now that the people have sustained him at the polls, it is not likely that he will waive that point.
A heron or crane was caught near here a few days since, in a trap set for muskrats. He weighed but four pounds, two ounces, and only two pounds when dressed, and yet was in good condition. He measured six feet, one inch from tip to tip of wings; length of wing, eighteen and one-half inches; of legs two feet; of bill, eight inches; of neck twenty-two inches. The skin has been stuffed.

The case of C. Hudson Smith, recently a minister, is a strange and regretful one. Last week, most if not all of his friends believed him dead; but he suddenly turns up again at San Francisco, and in bad company—but not new to him. When he first went there, he made the acquaintance of a disreputable young Mexican girl, and lavished his money freely on her. The importunate appeals of his friends finally drew him away from her, back to a wife he did not love and to a church which he had dishonored. His second disappearance was last week recorded. He had so effectually covered his tracks that it was generally believed he had drowned himself – and then he went straight to California, where he was expected by the girl in question. He had kept up a correspondence with her, and sent her one or more presents. This fallen man appears to be a hypocrite and a weak fellow. He is fairly intellectual, a student and preacher of considerable ability. He has a highly nervous organization. There is reason to believe that the death of their only child severed the one link which bound him to his wife; if he ever loved her, he ceased to do so then, or before. The last heard from him was that he was preparing to go to China.

A $625,000 libel suit brought by Mrs. June Dieterle of this village against Mrs. Isabel Moore the author, and Universal Publishing, distributor of the controversial novel “The Sex Cure,” has been reported settled, and litigation terminated. Mrs. Dieterle filed the suit in 1962 against Moore, who wrote under the pen name “Elaine Dorian,” and her publisher, claiming that she had suffered mental distress and damage to her reputation because of the book, which she alleged, the author based on her private life in Cooperstown.

Fenimore Art Museum will take on a new look this season, thanks to the efforts of the Lake and Valley Garden Club of Otsego County and the Norwich Garden Club and Oxford Garden Club of Chenango County. “We hope that area garden clubs will help us continue the tradition the Lake and Valley club began over 20 years ago,” said Suzanne Kingsley, president.
